Deir el-Medina was home to the artisans who worked on the tombs in the Valley of the Kings, 1550–1080 BC. The artisans are still here, but today it's the tourists that are their main clients.

Opened in 1839, it soon became a fashionable place for burial of the Victorian wealthy. Now a protected nature reserve with plants growing wild over the Gothic tombs and buildings. Many prominent figures are buried here such as Karl Marx, Michael Faraday, George Eliot, Douglas Adams and Patrick Caulfield.
