This is a series of photos from the island of Cyprus. Mostly from the capital, Nicosia.
After the war in 1974, the Greek and Turkish communities were separated by a closed and militarised border, the so called Green Line, drawn across the island and through the very heart of the capital city, Nicosia. The oldest neighbourhoods, located within the medieval Venetian walls, were bisected by this border which effectively became the front line in any future conflict. This naturally lent them an uncertain and unsafe future. Consequently, over the next 30 or so years, businesses and residents moved out. Streets that for centuries had been the centre of social and commercial life were more or less abandoned and left to decay.
Though a large part of the walled city is still under Turkish occupation and the island remains divided, the fear and fighting are long gone. This has led to the old city neighbourhoods slowly being renovated and brought back to life. The aim of this project was to photograph this transition, before the past vanishes completely through renovation or demolition. I've chosen to digitally isolate many of the buildings from their neighbours to emphasise and highlight their unique character: Tired faces trapped in time.
